Indonesia has taken a strategic step in strengthening horticultural exports through its inaugural export of fresh mangosteens to Australia. This export was carried out by PT. GHF Agro Mandiri, Subang Regency, West Java, to open access to high-value markets for the national mangosteen commodity.
The exported mangosteens came from leading production centers in West Java Province, particularly Purwakarta and Subang Regencies, known for their consistent fruit quality and meeting export market requirements. In this inaugural export, 174 cartons of mangosteens were shipped, with a net volume of 1,044 kilograms.
Mangosteen shipments to Australia are carried out by air to maintain the freshness and quality of the fruit until it reaches its destination country. The entire export process complies with plant quarantine requirements and the technical requirements of the destination country.
Mangosteen exports to Australia are carried out under a Government-to-Government (G-to-G) agreement between the Indonesian and Australian governments. This agreement provides regulatory certainty and strengthens market confidence in Indonesia’s agricultural commodity monitoring and biosafety assurance system.
From an economic perspective, this inaugural export activity demonstrates promising potential value. With an estimated economic value of IDR 91.5 million, mangosteen exports to Australia have the potential to continue growing as supply continuity, export volumes increase, and international market access expands.
More broadly, the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, through the West Java Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Office (BKHIT), plays a strategic role not only as a biosecurity guard but also as an economic tool to support the smooth flow of national exports. Quarantine plays a key role in opening global market access and increasing the competitiveness of Indonesian agricultural commodities.
The Head of the West Java Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency, Dr. Cahyono, M.H., stated that the first mangosteen export to Australia reflects the quarantine system’s readiness to support international market access for Indonesian horticultural commodities.
“This first mangosteen export to Australia demonstrates that horticultural commodities from West Java are capable of meeting the standards of the destination countries. Quarantine plays a role in ensuring biosafety, quality, and traceability, ensuring that shipped products are well-received in the international market,” said Cahyono.
He added that this successful export is expected to drive increased volume and sustainability of mangosteen exports going forward, while simultaneously strengthening the role of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency as a trade facilitator and lever for economic growth in the agricultural sector.
This successful initial export is expected to serve as a strategic entry point for businesses and investors to develop export-oriented mangosteen agribusinesses, as well as promote mangosteen as a high-value, superior commodity that significantly contributes to the national economy.
