East Kalimantan Province recorded exports of hundreds of tons of tiger prawns to international markets from January to May 2026. This commodity is the largest contributor to the region’s fisheries exports. Irma Listiawati, Head of the Aquaculture and Fisheries Product Competitiveness Strengthening Division of the East Kalimantan Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, stated that tiger prawn exports reached 769.9 tons in the first five months of 2026.
“Tiger prawns are the dominant commodity, with exports reaching 769.9 tons during the last five months of 2026, valued at IDR 173.3 billion,” Irma said in Samarinda on Tuesday (June 16, 2026). In addition to tiger prawns, East Kalimantan’s fisheries exports are also supported by several other commodities, including pink prawns, fresh grouper, fresh white pomfret, and white shrimp.
Irma stated that pink shrimp exports reached 239.2 tons with an economic value of IDR 31.6 billion. Meanwhile, fresh grouper recorded a shipment volume of 89.3 tons with a value of IDR 7.4 billion. International market demand was also evident in exports of fresh white pomfret. Of this commodity, 59.7 tons were shipped with a value of IDR 6.7 billion.
White shrimp is among the top five fishery export commodities in East Kalimantan. Shipments reached 27.7 tons with a value of IDR 4.7 billion. Irma stated that fishery products from East Kalimantan are regularly shipped to 12 export destination countries. Some of the main markets for these products include Japan, the United States, Taiwan, China, and Malaysia.
To expedite the distribution of fresh produce, East Kalimantan also operates direct export flights from Balikpapan to Wenzhou, China. This route uses Cargo Rimbun aircraft, which operate twice weekly. “This express air cargo delivery is specifically for superior products that must be delivered fresh, such as eels, crabs, and fresh fish,” said Irma.
This direct shipping route is expected to expedite the distribution of fresh fishery products from East Kalimantan to international markets and maintain the quality of export commodities.
