Agam’s Cinnamon Export to Malaysia

Agam's Cinnamon

Several cinnamon farmers in Malalak District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, are hoping the government will regulate and regulate the selling price of this spice, considering its price is considered too low.

“We really hope the government will pay attention to the selling price of cinnamon bark for farmers in Malalak,” said Sulaiman, a cinnamon farmer in Agam Regency, on Sunday.

In Malalak District, Agam Regency, apart from farming rice fields, local people generally work as cinnamon farmers, which the people there also know as cinnamon. The plant with the Latin name Cinnamomum is widely planted in home gardens and in forest areas.

Currently, said Sulaiman, the selling price for wood or cinnamon bark to collectors is only around IDR 30 thousand per kilogram (kg). In fact, the price has fallen to IDR 20 thousand per kilogram, even though this spice plant is an export commodity targeted at several countries in the world.

Similarly, Andri Yandra, another cinnamon farmer in Agam, hopes the government will implement policies that better support farmers. Moreover, the crop has been a source of livelihood for the community for decades.

“Our children here go to school because of this cinnamon, and they can even get degrees because of it. But now the price is very cheap,” he said.

He said that each cinnamon tree planted can be harvested at the earliest after eight years.

Ideally, according to Andri, the best cinnamon bark can only be harvested after 12 to 15 years. However, pressing needs and economic pressures often force residents to harvest cinnamon bark earlier, resulting in a very low selling price.

Meanwhile, Roni, a cinnamon bark collector or trader, stated that the current purchase price for cinnamon bark at the farmer level is around Rp 30,000 or a maximum of Rp 40,000 per kilogram.

“The purchase price depends on the quality. If it’s good, it can reach IDR 40,000 per kilogram,” he said.

Cinnamon farmers in Malalak temporarily halted production due to the impact of the flash floods in late November 2025. It wasn’t until about a month later that their supply of cinnamon, which had already penetrated markets in Malaysia and Europe, began to flow again.

Cinnamon collectors in Agam transport it to Bukittinggi before exporting it overseas.
