The craft industry is a strategic sector contributing to national economic growth and strengthening Indonesia’s manufacturing exports.
The Ministry of Industry recorded that the export value of the craft industry in the first quarter of 2026 reached USD 165.27 million, or approximately IDR 2.97 trillion.
This achievement increased by 4.08% compared to the same period the previous year, and also reflects the increasing appreciation of Indonesian craft products by the international market.
Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the crafts industry is a sector with significant potential for continued development because it can create high added value, expand employment opportunities, and strengthen regional economies.
“The government continues to strengthen the crafts industry ecosystem by increasing human resource capacity, developing product innovation, and expanding market access,” Agus said in a statement quoted on Friday (June 26, 2026).
Agus added that the development of the crafts industry is also directed at optimizing the use of domestic raw materials and supporting the implementation of a circular economy.
This step is expected to strengthen the industrial supply chain while creating new, sustainable business opportunities for the community.
In line with these efforts, Emmy Suryandari, Head of the Industrial Services Standardization and Policy Agency (BSKJI), emphasized that increasing the competitiveness of the national handicraft industry requires synergy between the government, business actors, and various stakeholders.
Through various mentoring and capacity-building programs, the Ministry of Industry continues to strive to produce creative products that meet market needs while providing economic benefits to the community,” said Emmy.
As part of its efforts to strengthen the national craft industry, the Samarinda Center for Standardization and Industrial Services (BSPJI) in collaboration with the Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDP) held a Palm Oil-Based Woven Craft and Paper Art Workshop in Tanjung Selor, Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan.
The event, which took place from June 22–26, 2026, received full funding support from BPDP as part of the palm oil-based green economy program aimed at increasing the economic value of craft products by optimizing the use of palm oil waste and by-products in small and medium-sized craft industries in North Kalimantan Province.
The workshop was attended by 30 craft entrepreneurs from Bulungan, Malinau, Nunukan, and Tana Tidung Regencies.
Participants received theoretical and practical training in making woven crafts and art paper using palm oil waste and by-products as the main raw materials.
